Another
fun filled weekend of racing in Portland with the seemingly
usual mix of weather conditions as well. The only difference
on this trip was that is was just Dale and I as Dan had actually
taken some time off and gone on a trip. A first in the seven
years I've known him. This made for a pretty interesting drive
to and from Portland as I learned a whole bunch about Dale
that I didn't know. He even told me some pretty interesting
stories about him and Dan from the times they were growing
up. I would love to share them, but I'm sworn to secrecy
.
At least on the website that is. It'll make for GREAT material
for my book later
on
Notes on practice:
Practice went quite well as we were able to get within a second
of the usual race pace without too much
drama. Some gearing changes and a slight geometry tweak had
things working really well in key sections of the track. With
that I was just loving the 600. It does everything so well.
Particularly slamming gears through turns four five and six
just puts a huge smile on my face. It's such a rewarding experience.
Imagine that - Actually enjoying riding.
Race 1
600 SuperSport
Weather conditions - warm & dry
Pirelli Tires front / rear - soft dot front - sofy dot rear
Total laps - 11
Result - 4th
I didn't get the best start from the third row, but managed
to get into the top five on the first lap. I worked my way
past Tom Wertman and set off looking for a way to get by Mike
Sullivan. On the next lap I made a mistake in turn four that
cost me a few seconds. With that Mike got the gap on me and
started to pull away. I gathered things up and started to
ride more cleanly improving my times appropriately. On the
last lap there was mayhem all over with at least three serious
crashes bringing out the red flag and an end to the race.
Albeit, I was slightly frustrated with my performance as I
just wasn't aggressive enough in the opening laps to get into
it.
Race 2
600 SuperBike
Weather conditions - wet
Tires front / rear - rain front - rain rear
Total laps - 12
Result 2nd
I got another decent start and slotted myself into fifth place
on the first lap. With us not having all that much experience
using the current rain set-up on the 600 I took the first
three laps to get a feel for what we had and decided to wait
for the tires to fully come up to operating temperature. Once
there I started to chip away exploring our relative limits.
The great thing about Portland is the smooth surface and it's
amazingly consistent grip. Wet, or dry. So this made it much
easier for me to find the edge. It's been a while since I
have felt that comfortable in the wet but I have to say I
was having fun splashing away through the turns with a big
smile on my face. With some luck I managed to get 2nd .
Now I've got a few weeks off to train and
get ready for the final WMRRA round of the season in Seattle.
Looking forward to it!
Stay tuned
